Jewelry is not only a means for adornment but it is a good investment of your money as well. Therefore, proper care and cleaning must be applied to the jewelry to keep it safe from dirt and damage. As you wear the jewelry for certain occasions, there are other occasions when you should take off your jewelry like the following:
While cleaning the house with or without chemicals to save it from scratches and damage.
While applying beauty products like make-up cleansers, nail-polish removers, perfumes, hair sprays etc.
When you wash dishes.
When you spray a pesticide or insecticide.
While gardening.
Water
Some types of gems and metals in the jewelry can be damaged by exposing them to water because water has natural chemicals and salts which reside on the surface of jewelry and enter inside from any little crack or opening. When you take a bath or go swimming, take off all of your ornaments. These precautions keep your jewelry ever shining and novel. Taking some time from your busy routine to clean your jewelry in detail is also good. How to Clean Particular Gems
The nature of gems differs greatly. There structure of gems owe to the minerals and chemicals found in its formation. Following are some tips for cleaning some famous gems:
Lapis lazuli is washed with cold water only and mild soap.
Turquoise, jade, marcasite, and emerald are also washed with cold water but if the weather is icy cold, use very slightly warm water so as to remove the dust and dirt completely.
Jade and pearl jewelry needs very soft rubbing with the softest moist cloth possible.
Emerald and opal can take a longer time in washing process as they are water resistant and do not get damaged.
Cleaning Diamond Jewelry
Cleaning diamond studded jewelry requires a different method. Though the diamonds are robust and hard but the dirt and dust settle on their surface. Even the skin oil can deposit on them. Cleaning them frequently is recommended. It is good hat you clean a jewelry piece with diamond every week. Use a soft bristle toothbrush. Soak it in the solution which is specially sold for cleaning diamonds. It is ammonia-based. If your diamond is very dirty as you have found your grandmas ring from the closet, soak it over night in the fluid but never use chlorine mixed fluids as they can damage the diamond.
If you need to clean the diamond by soaking and rushing, do it when you have the diamond separated from the setting. The metal of the jewelry and cementing of the diamond gets weak. If your diamond is fixed in the jewelry, seek the professional services of a jeweler to clean your piece.
